Setting Priorities in Life

The Priority of Worship
Psalm 130-134
Ps. 132
“I will not give sleep to eyes or slumber to my eyelids, until I find a place for the Lord, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

How much do we prioritize the worship of God? How often does the worship of God take a backseat to other activities? We attend church when it suits our schedule, but if other plans arise, church frequently gets pushed aside. However, this reveals more than just the busyness of our lives; it shows what is truly important to us, as we prioritize our lives based on what we value. To evaluate a person's values, look no further than how they spend their money and time. These are the two most important and limited resources, serving as the barometer of our value system.

Psalm 132 is a psalm that focuses on David's desire to build a place for the people to worship and come into God's presence. When David ascended to the throne, his primary desire was to build a temple in Jerusalem that would serve as a permanent home for the Ark of the Covenant, allowing God to be present with His people and enabling them to worship Him. In verses 3-5, we see how vital and prioritized this goal was in David’s life. It was so significant that nothing else was more important to David. In verses 3-4, we see how much this meant to David and gain a glimpse into his values. Having a place to worship was more important to David than even sleep itself. If given the chance, David would willingly give up sleep. He would devote his entire life, 24/7, to building the temple for the people to worship.
David's commitment and priority serve as a foundation for us to evaluate our own priorities and the importance we place on worshiping God. If given the opportunity, David would spend every moment of every day in the house of God, worshiping Him. In Psalm 63, David compares his longing for God to the most basic need of our lives: the desire for water. “O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh yearns for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” How much do we long for God? What priority do we assign to going to the house of worship to praise Him? Tragically, we often treat worship as a convenience rather than a necessity. We go to church when there is nothing else going on. However, even the most insignificant event disrupts our worship. The opportunity arises to go fishing or hunting, or take a trip to town for shopping, and we often push church aside as we pursue other priorities. Yet, what event, activity, or priority is more important than entering the house of worship to meet with the God of the universe? Is the worship of God the most important priority of your life?
