Security in a Insecure World

Finding security in an Insecure World
Jude 24-25
“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy. “

Recently, our society has become fixated on what we should fear.  Some things are seen as an existential threat, such as global warming, pandemics, and weapons of mass destruction.  Other things are seen as a threat to our health and safety: crime, the attacks of terrorists, and adversity.  But even more alarming is that we now fear those closest to us.  We fear our neighbors because they voted for a different party; we fear our schools because they are indoctrinating our children. We fear our doctors because we are told that the pharmaceutical companies are manipulating them. As the media bombards us with the tragedies that occur elsewhere, we start to see threats all around us, both real and imagined.  As a result, we live in a world where nothing is secure.   Everything becomes a threat simply because it happened to someone else. Fear becomes contagious.

After reading through the first 23 verses of Jude, it would be easy to become gripped by fear.  With false teachers masquerading as prophets infiltrating the church, how can we find security when our faith is constantly being challenged?  So, we no longer trust anyone.  We fear for the spiritual future of our children that they will be sucked into the void of false teaching and fall prey to its deception. Just when it would seem that Jude is bringing us to the brink of fear, he provides us the basis for our security and the assurance of our hope.  Having warned of the proliferation of false teaching, Jude now gives us the security we have.  Our security is not found in our ability to withstand the onslaught but in the person of God.

Jude reminds us of God’s infinite power that can keep us from stumbling.  God’s power is sufficient to overcome the threat of false teaching and protect us from their influence.  The ability of God to guard and protect his people appears throughout the New Testament (John 17:11; 2 Thess. 3:3; 1 Peter 1:5; Rev. 3:10).  In each of these cases, the focus is upon the threats that come against the Christian that would undermine their faith and security in Christ.  No matter how significant the threat, God’s power to protect us is far greater.  In this case, God protects us from falling or stumbling in our faith.  Our security in Christ is not in our ability to maintain our faith but in God’s power to protect us from any threat, even the danger of false teaching.  This is our assurance that we will stand blameless before Him.  Because He possesses all authority and power, no one can threaten our spiritual well-being when trusting in Him. This is why we do not need to fear the present or the future for ourselves or our children and grandchildren.  Our God is greater than the world we live in, and He will protect us and our children until He returns.  In a world of fear, we no longer need to be afraid, even as our world is radically changing.  When we find ourselves becoming apprehensive about the future when the uncertainty of tomorrow gives us anxiety today, we do not need to worry, for the infinite God who has saved us in the past and delivered us in the present is the same God who will protect us in the future.
