The God Who Creates

Week 1:  God Revealed in Genesis
God is the Supreme Creator
Genesis 1:1-25

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…Then God said…and it was so.”

Six simple words (4 words in Hebrew), and yet they are so profound that they are beyond our ability to fathom. Six words that shape our understanding of life, the universe, and God himself. Those six words are “Then God said…and it was so.” In them, we discover that all creation owes its existence, purpose, and survival to the person God who merely speaks and the universe comes into existence. He brought all things into existence through the power of his spoken word.
When the Bible states that God created the universe by his word, the Bible affirms that God is infinite in power and completely independent of creation. Furthermore, he is not dependent on any other source of power to achieve his divine purpose. There was simply nothing, God spoke, and the universe came into existence. No struggle, no exertion of exhausting activity, just an effortless act of divine splendor.
Furthermore,  in creation, God reveals himself as the originator and determiner of all moral and natural law. God is not confined by the laws of physics; instead, he governs and determines them. Even more important, in his creative word, he established the moral law upon which the universe would operate. As the originator of all things, God remains accountable to no one and is under no law other than his own being and character. The moral law he established is an expression of his nature. God, not humanity, determines what is right and what is wrong.
In creation, we also discover absolute supremacy and sovereignty over all things, including humanity. As the creator, he has unbridled authority over all things. We cannot question what he does, for he has the divine right as the creator of all things to do as he pleases. Isaiah 45:9 reminds us, “Woe to the one who quarrels with his Maker— An earthenware vessel among the vessels of earth! Will the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you doing?’ Or the thing you are making say, ‘He has no hands ‘?”  However, the one who created us is not an impersonal force who merely acts without compassion or concern for what is made. He is a personal God who expressed and revealed himself in all his creative acts (Romans 1). He remains engaged within creation and watches over every being and thing within creation. He takes notice when a sparrow dies and knows every circumstance we face in life.
Because God is infinite in power and watchful over us, we have hope in a universe dominated and broken by sin. No matter how damaged our world may be or how much evil may seem to dominate our personal lives, we have an infinite God who stands above all things. He is both the cause and the sustainer of the universe. He is both the starting point and conclusion of all things. Everything is created by him and for him (Colossians 1:16). He determined the day the universe came into existence and the day the universe will cease. Not chance, not the impersonal laws of natural order, not evolutionary mechanisms, not even humanity, but the personal God who loves us and is infinite in power determines the destiny of the universe and our life. The hope of all humanity rests upon these six simple words.
As you look at the world around you, take time to reflect on the infinite power of God, who merely speaks, and the universe comes into existence. A God who possesses such power is a God who can care for you in every circumstance in life. Nothing is beyond his ability to overcome.
