Security in an Insecure World
Security in an Insecure World.
Today’s Reading Psalm 46-50
Today’s Devotional Ps. 46
“Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
Where do we find security and tranquility in a world of turmoil and conflict? Every day, the news confirms that we’re in a world of rapid change and personal hopelessness. Our culture is in upheaval, and conflicting worldviews continue to divide the nation. But the uncertainty goes beyond just the national scene. In our own personal lives, we face circumstances that undermine our sense of security. Life becomes less and less predictable and more and more frightful. According to a survey of 10,000 young people, aged 16-25, in 10 countries, 75% of respondents reported that the “future is frightening.” According to a survey of all age groups in the United States, 42% of the respondents felt anxious or worried about the future. However, for those who read the Bible, this culture of fear is not surprising but predictable.
One of the characteristics of those who reject God and His moral truth is fear (Prov 1:30-33).
One of the mantras of today is “Science is real.” This is the belief that the scientific method, with its reliance on observation, experimentation, and logical deduction, is the most reliable way to understand how the world works. However, science, which can be used to accomplish great good, such as the healing of diseases, can also be used for great evil. Science and humans cannot answer the problem of good or evil, for it fails to recognize the evil that exists in every heart (Romans 3:10-18). The more we turn to human reason for answers, the more uncertain and insecure our world becomes.
In Psalm 46, the Psalmist points us to the answer. How do we find security, hope, and confidence in an insecure world? The answer lies in our faith in God. Only God can give security in an insecure world. No matter how much turmoil we face in this world, even if the earth itself should collapse into destruction, we can have security. The analogy of the mountains slipping into the heart of the sea points to the complete collapse of the world around us. When our life descends into complete chaos and adversity, when the Doctor informs us that we have an incurable cancer, when we have lost all our financial security in the collapse of the stock market, there is only one place where we can find our refuge and strength, and that is God. God remains untouched by the affairs of the world. He is the one constant in a world of flux. Nothing can affect Him. No power can unseat Him from His throne. God is our comfort because His rule is eternal, unchangeable, and unchallenged (Psalm 46:4-5). He is the only one who can bring hope to the world by putting an end to the devastating effects of sin.
We can stop being anxious and fearful because He remains enthroned in heaven. Science or human wisdom cannot solve man’s ultimate need—the need for life in the face of death and the need for deliverance from the evil present in every heart. However, the one who created the universe can bring salvation from death and sin. The answer to the problems of our world today is not found in human wisdom or human politics; it is found in God. Instead of living a life of fear, we need to live a life of faith. Instead of looking to man for answers, we are to look to God. When you are facing circumstances that bring fear and anxiety in your life, “Cease Striving and Know that I am God.” When our faith is in God, our fear of the future and the uncertain of life becomes transformed into the calm assurance that God is in control, and that is all we need to know.
